Central Processing Unit (CPU)

overview

Summary

Central Processing Unit (CPU) serves as the brain of a computer. It executes instructions provided by computer programs, including basic arithmetic, logical, control and input/output (I/O) operations. The CPU consists of two primary components: the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) for performing computations and the control unit for instruction interpretation. CPUs have evolved significantly over the years, from large, complex electrical devices to modern microprocessors.
